Plate solve problem in the field

Hi,
After many months of trouble free use of SGP, suddenly plate solving via the local version of astronomy. net has stopped working even to the extent of failing to solve images which it had previously solved without problem. Below is part of the debug file of last night’s unsuccessful attempts:

I have not upgraded to the latest version of SGP because until last night, I had no problems with the version I was using; for the same reason I have not upgraded to Win 10. The equipment profile is unchanged. I hope that someone will be able to identify the problem. I am at a Star Party away from home for a week and although the internet service on site is unreliable, I will check regularly for any reply.

You are not using a local instance of astrometry.net. You are attempting to use the online nova.astrometry.net:

So if your internet at the star party is unreliable this is most likely why the solves failed.

Did you install Ansvr via Andy’s installer, and change the end point to http://127.0.0.1:8080/api as in his directions?

Hi Joel,
Many thanks for your reply which should enable me to take advantage of the clear skies forecast here for tonight.
I did not install Ansvr myself - I have very little computer expertise and Laurie Yates in Spain saw my request for help on a forum and kindly set up everything for me last year using Teamviewer. The local version of astronomy.net has worked perfectly ever since until last night and I am baffled as to how Laurie’s settings became altered - if things are working I change nothing. I was not intentionally trying to use the online solver - there is no wifi in the field.
So if I have understood you correctly I have to change a setting somewhere in Astronomy.net to “http://127.0.0.1:8080/api”.

I have made the change as suggested as seen in line 3 of the last bit of the latest debug file shown below but I still can’t solve either one of last night’s images or others which I solved successfully earlier this year.

Yeah, you can’t just change the endpoint. You need to setup local ansvr using the installer according to the link I provided earlier. I suspect that all your successful solves from home in the past were actually calling the online version of astrometry, not the local version, because you have a good internet connection at home. Another problem you are likely going to face is that in order to install local ansvr you will also need to download the astrometric indexes that the local version needs. These are somehwat large files to download. If you can get to a place with a good/fast wifi connection just follow the instructions in the link I provided above.

Also, you really should update to the latest version of SGP as it now includes a local solver, Platesolve2, which is very robust and works fast. Then you would use the local ansvr as your failover option if Platesolve2 should fail.

I did not tick the box “use blind solver failover” so I think at home I was using the local version of astronomy.net . Also the solves were so fast that I doubt whether the online version was employed. I will follow your advice and (with fingers crossed) install the latest SGP.

A couple of observations – earlier in the year, my blind failovers to Astrometry.net were taking 300+ seconds to solve. I have good internet access in my observatory so that seemed strange. I then switched to a local install of ANSVR and the solve times dropped to around 90 seconds. However, a few weeks ago, I was testing with Astrometry.net again and the solves were taking around 30 seconds. So, perhaps Astromentry.net installed new / more servers or better internet to handle their volumes.

Also, I have both PlateSolve2 and PinPoint installed. In my experience, PlateSolve2 is significantly faster and more reliable than PinPoint. In some testing I did, I observed PlateSolve2 handling a much bigger “hint error” than PinPoint. This can be important if your slews are not super accurate because it means SGP does not have to resort to the blind failover nearly as often.

Well let’s concentrate on your “in the field” problem and look at other things when you get home. By all means update SGP. This will install Platesolve2, but you then also need to download an index catalogue. See this thread for instructions (just download the APM catalogue):

Hopefully with platesolve 2 you will be able to solve successfully in the field, and then we can look at your blind solve failover (astrometry/ansvr) when you get home.

By the way, what star party are you at? I was very close to going to the Illinois Dark Sky Star Party starting today, but unfortunately the weather doesn’t look good so I opted not to go.

I am now with a friend who has fast internet in the field and SGP upgraded very quickly. Now for the APM catalogue. I will follow your link. The star party is at Kelling Heath, Norfolk, UK - about 400 of us.

Having upgraded to the latest version of SGP, I installed the APM catalogue and Plate Solve 2 proved to be reliable and very fast. Now home after the star party, I will try to get the blind solve failover working.
