Plate Solving with Focal Reducer

Hi All,

I have a friend that is using the ZWO asi290 with a 6.3 focal reducer on an 8" SCT. Does anyone know what the image scale/settings for this would be? I have tried a number of things and just cant seem to get plate solving to work.

Thanks

Dan

Image Scale and Field of View Calculator should do what you need. :). Just remember that you’re at f/6.3, not f/10, due to the reducer.

I did that but first the fr effectively reduce the focal length? Does that need to be adjusted to the new fl?

Yes, as said above, you’re at f/6.3 not f/10. (The f/10 is a presumption…most 8" SCTs are at f/10. You are, of course, encouraged to double check that for your particular scope)

You will have to reduce your scope’s focal length correspondingly.

Have your friend submit one of his typical images to Astrometry.net and it solve it. One of the returned values is scale. Having it do the actual solve removes all problems.
