Does it mess up the image or make the image useless to process?

The image is useless.
I’ve got to thinking that maybe the problem actually is the ribbon cable problem that spudweb pointed to. This whole thing started on a night when the camera failed to download an image and set there for hours leading to a pier crash. At that point the camera was still using the same drivers I had been using successfully for months. I only started messing with drivers after that incident and some computer/camera connection issues. Perhaps the cable is seated just enough that the camera connects fine but gives me this strange image behavior. I think I’ll go ahead and open up the camera to inspect the ribbon.
