SG Pro will not start

Hello,

I have SG Pro version 3.0.4.130 running on two Windows 10 system (up to date with security upgrades), a laptop and a Minix NEO N42C-4. All has been well on both systems until last night when SG Pro would not start on the Minix system - the wheel spins for a couple of seconds and then stops, nothing appears in Task Manager.

I attempted to remove the Sequence Generator Pro content in AppsData folder to no avail. I uninstalled and reinstalled SG Pro but nothing changed. Ultimately, I reverted to version 2.6.1.114 and the program started. I then upgraded back to 3.0.4.130 and again SG Pro would not start. As a final test, I installed version 3.0.2.94, which worked.

I left it there and did not test further but before I rebuild all the profiles, I wanted to check in and see if there is any troubleshooting step I could take to get version 3.0.4.130 running again.

I assume you mean 3.0.3.130, since it is the latest offered by the SGP website. 3.0.4.130 doesn’t exist, I think.

Apparently no error message appears when you try to open SGP? You probably should check if any log files appear.

You are right, typo on my part. The latest release of version 3: 3.0.3.140.

I ran some additional tests today. I upgraded SG Pro from 3.0.2.94 back to 3.0.3.140 and again SG Pro did not start. I tried to revert the most recent Windows updates in hope that it was a compatibility issue but nothing changed.

Ultimately, I downgraded SG Pro back to 3.0.2.94 and everything works.

Any hints to what may be going on?

Can one of the developers please comment as to whether this is a known issue in 3.0.3.140 or if it more likely related to Windows 10 driver compatibility (maybe one of the ASCOM drivers)?

Sometimes the UI layout file can get corrupted between version changes. You can follow the instructions here to reset it:

I’m running into the same issues … 3.0.3.140 was working fine, machine locked up and needed to be rebooted, after that 3.0.3.140 would fail on loading with the same failure mentioning “System.XML” … reloading 3.0.2.94 works fine …

Machine is Win7 x86 SP 1 …

sgp /recover had no effect …

sgp /reset had no effect …

Deleting the contents of [User]\AppData\Local\SequenceGenerator as the help file mentioned had no effect …

Checking the contents of \AppData\Local with a failed run, I don’t see any trace of a log file; so the failure is happening before your log file is opened …

… note that with 3.0.2.94, the NewtonSoft.Json DLL is loaded after SystemCore, while in 3.0.3.140 it’s loaded after the Serialization DLL … that points to a failure in NewtonSoft.Json to load something properly and that exception not being handled in a try/catch

So looking at the module dump, note that everything goes fine until you load up the NewtonSoft.Json DLL, at which time the program is unable to continue. The NewtonSoft.Json library [Json.NET - Newtonsoft] is pretty good, but JSON is very tricky to parse and it’s easy to run off the rails with it; looking at the NewtonSoft source code at [GitHub - JamesNK/Newtonsoft.Json: Json.NET is a popular high-performance JSON framework for .NET] they provide a “JsonWriterException” and “JsonReadException” class example in their sample [Newtonsoft.Json/ExceptionTests.cs at master · JamesNK/Newtonsoft.Json · GitHub] code … could there be an unhandled exception in the JSON code that SGP is (likely) trying to parse when the program starts up that is happening?

Digging further, located in \AppData\Local\Main_Sequence_Software\Sequence_Generator.exe_[Random]
there are a series of subdirectories corresponding to versions, with each version subdirectory containing a “user.config” XML file. Removing the “user.config” XML file in the 3.0.3.140 directory in a failing system fixed the problem and 3.0.3.140 was able to load properly …
