SGP Having Issues with ASCOM 6.1 SP1 on Windows 10

So it would seem that the latest version of SGP is able to start, but just barely, on Windows 10. I installed the latest ASCOM 6.1 SP1 and whenever I start SGP, I get this message:

If you click Quit, SGP obviously closes but if you click Continue, SGP opens up as normal. The splashscreen stays open in the background though. The details appear to point to ASCOM as being the issue. My take on it is that installing ASCOM 6.1 SP1 on Windows 10 doesn’t create the registry entry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ASCOM.

The problem is extended further as though SGP appears to start when you click Continue on this error message, I can select my QSI CCD camera and its internal filter wheel from my profiles but I can’t select my focuser or telescope. Both the focuser and telescope lists are empty and only say “No Focuser” and “No Telescope”. I have made sure both my Lakeside Motorised Focuser and EQMod with my EQDirect cable are installed, but nothing appears. I think this again links to ASCOM being the issue.

I just tried running the ASCOM ProfileExplorer, seeing as the error log above is talking about ASCOM profiles and this came up:

Please disregard this thread. I uninstalled ASCOM 6.1 SP1 completely, reinstalled it, rebooted and now everything works. I don’t know what happened since I’m pretty sure I’ve tried that before! :smile:

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll try to look at this when W10 gets installed on my backup system.

The ASCOM installation opens up some parts of the registry that are normally read only and my guess is that the W10 installation restores these to their default settings. That could easily produce the multitude of error messages that you see.

Uninstalling and reinstalling ASCOM should resolve this but it would be nice if there was a less extreme way to recover. If someone else has this then I suggest trying a repair install of the ASCOM platform without doing an uninstall. Hopefully that will restore the ASCOM registry settings.

For what it’s worth, I performed a W8.1 to W10 in place upgrade. I did not experience these issues.

Thank you for your quick attention to this, Chris and Ken! Indeed uninstalling ASCOM completely and reinstalling it, followed by a reboot, fixed up all the problems. Odd indeed since I have never had any such issues before, on any operating system. Anyway, it’s all ok now, thankfully! :slight_smile:
